Google Leverages Social Media to Allow Those in Egypt to Tweet

In what Google calls a “weekend project,” they have enabled anyone in Egypt with an voice connection to tweet.

From their blog:

‘We worked with a small team of engineers from Twitter, Google and SayNow, a company weacquired last week, to make this idea a reality. It’s already live and anyone can tweet by simply leaving a voicemail on one of these international phone numbers (+16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855) and the service will instantly tweet the message using the hashtag #egypt. No Internet connection is required. People can listen to the messages by dialing the same phone numbers or going to twitter.com/speak2tweet.”

Social Media in Perspective: Egypt

We all know how crucial social media and technology have become to every day life. We acknowledge the evolution of social media and the hallowing power it has slowly gathered throughout its growth.  While we may not directly acknowledge its importance every day and use it in a more passive sense, posting status updates on twitter and uploading humorous pictures to twitter almost as subconsciously as we breathe, the recent events in Egypt have brought to the forefront just how important our accessibility to social media and technology has become.

Under government orders, communication services in Egypt have been suspended. At the snap of a political finger, access to twitter, facebook, tumblr, etc, were snatched away from the Egyptian people at a time when it is so sorely needed. Their right to communicate has been unceremoniously extinguished, leaving our only source of news on the issue to be the journalists there who find sub par means of communication in order to send out their own messages.

For those who are interested, here is an article from Gizmodo detailing how Egypt took away the internet.

I like how Flickr is not trying to change its goal in order to compete with Facebook. Instead, it holds to the value of “building the best experience for users”. Flickr stays true to itself and hoping to recall the experience of sharing photos before the digital age.

Using Twitter In a New Way

I am a relatively new twitter user and I have to admit I love it after orignially being completely opposed to it. I think my early hatred of twitter was due to my lack of undertstanding for twitter. Nonetheless, I use twitter primarily to get the most up to date sports news. However on Friday I used twitter in a new way which related to what we were talking about in class on thursday. A kid from my highschool who is a year younger than me ended up taking a lot of xnax and got into a car crash in which he killed another man when he was a senior in highschool. My friend sent me the link to the twitter feed of Susan Spencer who is a court reporter for the Palm Beach Post. The kid’s trial was on friday and Spencer tweeted every minute updates on the trial. I watched the screen for hours as she tweeted the happenings of the entire trial. I thought it was interesting that I was able to basically watch the trial online as it was happening because of twitter rather than have to wait for the trial decision to reach media outlets such as newspapers.

Social Networking Sites and Their Meanings

While sitting in our 486 Social Media class this week and also reading the article by Danah Boyd: http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2009/08/16/twitter_pointle.html

I couldn’t help but feel some sort of way about Social Networking Sites. Let me explain. I currently, am not a facebook user. …. I know, shocking. I deactivated my facebook last September and to be perfectly honest i’ve been happy without it.

So why did I deactivate my facebook, you may ask. Well, I understand that things, especially technology, are always changing and improving. Yet, when I logged onto facebook, I felt like something was ALWAYS changing everytime I logged on. … I know some of you know what i’m talking about. Everytime you logged in there was something new with the mini-feed or they changed the presentation and organization of mini-feed and profile pages. You used to be able to block certain people from seeing what you wrote, way back in the day, and now you cant even do that anymore. They’ve changed alot of the privacy setting. I do beleive that if the privacy setting are used correctly, that you’re information will be somewhat safe, I mean if its on the interent, how safe is it really?

Anyways, back to the topic. I started to log onto facebook less and less, not only because of the privacy setting but because I realized what it was becoming. Not necessarily saying that what it is now is a bad thing, it’s just not my cup of tea.

I thought it was awkwardly funny that parents were joining, but it was to be expected. It was no longer a social network for our generation but now something for everyone around the world no matter how young or old. Once again, none of this is what really bothered me.

What got me… businesses were starting to use facebook to look up potential employees. I really didnt like this. I remember facebook being a tool to keep in touch, post pictures, and say what was on your mind. Not a tool to go onto someone’s page, and judge them based on the fun they were having in their pics and the comments that were written on their page. I think its inappropriate for companies to use this social media site and other social sites, which were meant for something fun, and use it against people. It wasnt made for that.

As for twitter, I never had a twitter account until I joined the class. Its catchy, I kind of like it, but im still getting the hang of things. Now, I remember hearing in class that the meaning of twitter was branded by its users. People would tweet about whatever that was on their mind or whatever they were doing. So it was basically a bunch of facebook status updates. Cool.

Yet, in class, I kept hearing about everything you shouldnt do and what you shouldnt say. But i thought twitter was made exactly for that reason. Oh but wait, we cant say certain things because those same companies that were checking on your profile on facebook have now crossed over to twitter and are still doing the same things. Isnt that grand. So now, I have to watch what I say because of companies and corporations. Where’s the freedom in that?

Like Danah said twitter users “They want to know what the people around them are thinking and doing and feeling. They want to share their state of mind and status so that others who care about them feel connected.”

Why does it have to be censored?

I know that things change, so it is what it is. Im not hating, and i know i may sound a little traditional and old, but thats how I feel.

And although i may not use one site or the other, i would like to believe that I still know whats going on.

Egyptian Protests & Social Media

We have recently witnessed unrest and upheaval in Iran and Tunisia that was fueld and communicated through social media; like in those countries, upset citizens in Egypt have taken to social media in order to convey personal convictions.

The protests in Egypt are now in their fourth day and the President’s family has been reportedly evacuated from the country; there is some speculation he too has been evacuated. While police were originally called in to control protesters, soldiers from the Egyptian army have now been brought in to protect key governmental buildings according to CNN.

President Hosni Mubarak is spoke broadcast on CNN. He stated “I am absolutely on the side of freedom of each citizen” and argued against chaos/protests as a route to democracy.

However, Twitter has been blocked in Egypt as of 11 a.m. EST on January 26th. Personally, I agree wholeheartedly with Twitter’s statement that “the open exchange of info and views benefits societies and helps governments connect” (BusinessWeek).

According to the New York Times, the United States has “publicly supported Mr. Mubarak but privately pushed him to reform after decades in power.” While the paper reported that President Obama has not directly address the protests with President Mubarak, the American government is taking the stance that the grievances need to be addressed.

Vodaphone was ordered by the Egyptian government to shut down service in specific areas. This would impact mobile usage of social media sites and potentially impede communication for the sake of planning/continuing protests and sending information to media outlets outside the country.

Amazing first hand video, however, has been broadcast on sites such as CNN and I recommend checking it out online or on your television.

Virtual v real world interactions

So, I recognized someone out and about this weekend from my Twitter followers. I knew this person’s name, and recognized them from their Twitpic. After they had followed me a while back I had looked at how they may have found me, and so I knew things about them like their hometown and where they go to school. I saw this person in real life, and although our twitter interaction wasn’t extensive, I felt well, weird going up and telling them I recognized them from Twitter.

I mean, I guess my point is that some of the connections made online, may just stay there. While I’d argue there’s nothing wrong with that, it does call into question the validity of “social” networks in name. Is it social?

Maybe it should be called something else. Facebook is similar, where you bump into someone who friended you that you don’t really know, and nothing is said. Anyone had this happen to them? Thoughts?

SM and 'terrain'

Interesting discussion at the TdMS TeamOrange meeting yesterday about what constitutes ‘terrain.’ An architecture student said that terrain is more than just the physical landscape. It is also the people that populate that landscape.

Now social media like Flickr, Foursquare and applications like Yelp  give us a whole different take on the same landscape- which are the best restaurants, where were a series of pictures clicked in a certain location etc. Has SM then also fundamentally altered our idea of terrain, landscape and location? In a manner that is  far different than what maps and geography did?

Great viewpoint to add to the Defense against the D.A. perspective with respect to social media in #rotoloclass. As a business do you have a social media policy or social media strategy?? A thought: policy alone is a reactionary & combative defense whereas a strategy promotes adaptation, engagement and hopefully… community.

Sounds like good news to me! I’ve noticed that my Facebook messages about FarmVille, Mafia Wars, and the like have decreased considerably over the past few months.  Smart move on the part of Facebook to monitor how News Feed posts are perceived (“liking” or commenting vs. hiding a message or marking a spam) and then acting from there.

I personally am not a fan at all of Facebook apps, but I might hop on the bandwagon for these…

Social Network Users Satisfied With Privacy → emarketer.com

Just came across this study done by Harris Interactive last month, which found that 78% of social network users think privacy settings will keep us safe.  No real surprise that younger users are more trusting and more confident that privacy settings will work.  Here’s my question - what is an echo boomer? We’re all in the “echo boomer” generation? Has anyone heard us referred to that way before? Maybe I’m just late to the party, but it’s a first for me! :)

New Phones from Facebook? → mashable.com

So it seems as though Facebook is working on a phone. However, this isn’t the first time someone has tried this. INQ1, the “worlds most advanced social networking phone” was released in late 2008, and awarded best handset from the mobile phone congress (who is that, anyways?) in 2009.

However, the phone was released at the same time as the market was already saturated with iPhones, Blackberrys, and (the rising) Android. Because the feature set on the INQ1 was poor in comparison to the other competitors and a lack of distributors, it never really took on in American markets.

The INQ1 was also not designed by Facebook, but merely integrated many of Facebook’s features. The new phone, manufactured by HTC will likely offer better integration, but what is the benefit to the user?

I don’t see this phone succeeding for a two reasons:

1) Social networking has become bigger than Facebook. the INQ1 understood that and offered integration with other sites. Now we have Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, along with email integration and a robust mobile web on our current phones. Why would we want to switch to a phone that offers fewer capabilities?

2) Our current system is working. Don’t get me wrong, there could definitely be better integration between my current phone and facebook, but the use of apps has been enormously successful  for Facebook and people continue to use the product, but the current facebook apps offer a pretty good feature set that gives me almost entire functionality of the ‘non-mobile’ site. Why should I pay money for something that will offer a better user experience of Facebook than I already have?

Is it just me or could this also be getting too personal? I’m a little creeped out by people who have called me on my phone number listed on Facebook, or seeing a co-worker display my profile picture as their phone background (this actually happened). Perhaps I just need to step up privacy on my social networks, but I also don’t fully trust Facebook enough to invest in one if their phones. I am comfortable, however, with having an ‘app’ on my phone

What does everyone think about this? Do you think that Facebook is branching out too far? Will the phone succeed? What kind of changes can users expect to see after the supposed phone is released?

For Obama, Getting Message Out Online Is a Challenge → nytimes.com

A definitely must read for #rotoloclass.

While much of the nation followed along with the State of the Union address on twitter (hashtag was #SOTU) this NY Times article discusses how Obama is facing challenges updating his presidency to technology. This comes as a surprise, given that his use of social media was one of the tipping points during his presidential campaign.

This is something I noticed as well, and I was talking to my twitter followers about it last night’s speech. While the @barackobama and @whitehouse twitter accounts were actively tweeting during the broadcast, they were only repeating 140 character snippets of the speech. I didn’t find this to be an effective use of twitter, as it could have been much more conversational and engaging. Here’s a few tweets from a conversation I was having w/ my fellow Broadcast Journalism Newhouse ‘10 grad @Erik_Elken.

@Erik_Elken: @AlyssaHenry we know he doesn’t tweet anyway. Great way for people not near a TV to get the real-time bullet points of speech. Great idea.

@AlyssaHenry: @Erik_Elken it could be more effective. Don’t repeat speech, add to conversation & interaction. Plenty of news orgs are live-tweeting speech

@Erik_Elken: @AlyssaHenry true, although I see it more his job to get out his message and the media’s job to report, react and create discussion

@AlyssaHenry: @Erik_Elken true, but that’s not the purpose of twitter. It’s all about instant, two-way communication, not a one-way “broadcast” message.

What do you all think? Would love to hear other opinions!

Tweeting and sports

There seems to be some issues about tweeting in the NFL and NBA, players tweeting about each other and the game. These are two different ESPN shows talking about this in the NFL. It was talked about before when Lebron James was tweeting about a game.

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=6057010 - from First Take and Maurice Jones-Drew trash talking during the Bears/Packers game

Personally, to control this would be to write something in a players contract about not talking about players or the game. But is this possible? fair? Personally, I think they should be able to tweet about the game, it gives them that interaction with fans, when it comes to the trashing talk point, i’m not so sure. I think its part of the game and something that happens, just now the whole world can hear it.

Other thoughts on this?
