Army launches social media handbook
Article: http://mashable.com/2011/01/20/us-army-social-media-handbook/
Nice to see that organizations are recognizing that their employees are going to use social media and is giving guidelines on how to do so. I realize that maybe this is not their role and wonder if it is appropriate for organizations to have rules for how we socialize. However, it is...
Why do we expect too much from Twitter?
I was reading http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2009/08/16/twitter_pointle.html and I wanted to share my thoughts about it.
I really do not understand why people cannot appreciate Twitter as it is. I joined Twitter only a few days back and I have been enjoying it so far. I have seen people posting about their social lives and that does not bother me at all. It is there to provide a...
I Had Oatmeal For Breakfast
Do you care? Probably not! And, as @rotolo noted on day one of class, Twitter most certainly isn’t about what your tweeps (or you) had for breakfast. But, that said, I have tweeted before about my breakfast of choice…then followed it with a tweet giving career advice…then RT’ed a friend’s blog post…you get that point. I think it’s so important to sprinkle...
The Rise of Social Media Worldwide
Link to the article (infographic): http://socialnewswatch.com/social-media-the-impact/
I just read an article from the Social News Watch blog called “Social Media: The Impact” written by JD Rucker, and it consists of an interesting infographic by Jim Piccolo that summarizes the wide use of social media by businesses in 2010. The infographic shows that the social media phenomenon exists all over...
Mashable reading
I’ve read some of the articles from the Twitter Guide Book but I really liked the one about the 40 best brands on Twitter. I know its from ‘09 but still found it very interesting and how most of these brands still have a good presents on Twitter. The other part that I liked about the article was talking about the people behind the companies and what their backgrounds were. Would be...

Awesome quote: “Entering cyberspace can be a sign of an authentic search for personal encounters with others, provided that attention is paid to avoiding dangers such as enclosing oneself in a sort of parallel existence, or excessive exposure to the virtual world,” he said.
Politicans are getting involved in social media!

Encyclopedia Dramatica: Not Dead
Encylopedia Dramatica, a wikipedia-hybrid for the 4chan crowd, went dark for a while today, and everyone thought it was the end of an era. Nope, the hating will continue.

Story about online marketing strategy of Harry...
It might be an old one but it is the very story the first time I learnt about how big impact social media could bring to a company. And I want to share with you how amazing social media has brought to the Wizard World of Harry Potter Theme Park in the Universal Studio.
After the Wizard World of Harry Potter Theme Park was constructed, the vice president of marketing at Universal Orlando Resort...
Why twitter is legit for job searching 1/23
Warning this post exceeds 140 chars.:
I used to be like most people, and think that I would never get that “into” Twitter. (The same way I feel about joining Foursquare now). There are constantly new tags, lingo & sharing apps. (E.g. Twitterfall like we use in class was new to me!) I really enjoy Twitter chats when I have the time and JUST discovered the Tweet Chat website that...
on social media blackouts and cross platform tools
I spent the better part of 24 hours (almost) completely social media free while entertaining a guest this weekend. Save checking into a few places on Foursquare, I didn’t really look at my Twitter feed, update my Facebook status, or post a sarcastic IT related anything on Tumblr. (I also didn’t answer email or read my Google Reader queue.) And it felt weird. I’m also kind of...
Tosh.0
My roommates and I were watching Tosh.0 and it was hilarious as always. I find it amazing how the show is based around videos that Tosh and his staff just find online through YouTube, Vimeo, etc. We think it would be awesome to make a video and get it on his show. Obviously this would not be easy, and likely impossible. However, we do have that video project in Rotolo’s class. We are trying...

'Social grooming' in the social media age.
Danah Boyd, writing about Twitter and the merits of the so-called “pointless babble” (http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2009/08/16/twitter_pointle.html) uses an interesting term- ‘social grooming.’ This, according to Boyd, is one way in which even the so-called meaningless babble on Twitter can be construed as useful. It is interesting to note that a google search...
When Twitter is Wrong
I read an interesting article this week that called Twitter “a stream of content” and defined it as a real-time news network. The author’s main question was, what happens when tweets are incorrect? For example, when Senator Giffords was shot, the first tweets reported that she had died. Later tweets reported that she was only injured and in critical condition.
In my opinion, one of the best...
facebook friend request
Today I got a friend request on facebook from someone I did not know. I noticed several of my friends were friends with this person, so I asked one of them who this person was. She told me she didn’t know, but assumed she knew them because they were friends with people they know. I admit doing the same thing and found it interesting that we assume we know someone because they have some...
