"Skype Launches a Dedicated Network for Teachers" →
According to this Mashable article written by Sarah Kessler, Skype launched a new network called “Skype in the Classroom” on March 29. This network is targeted towards teachers who frequently use Skype in class for reasons such as connecting with other classes or having guest speakers. (Doesn’t this sound familiar?) By using this network, teachers are able to create their own profiles as well as...
Google snaps your face and finds your profile →
This article is about Google’s new mobile app of facial recognition that allows user to picture a friend and then access to his/her google profile. It is currently an opt-in model that requires users’ permission to give out the personal data and privacy information. Even though, it has somewhat aroused the anxiety among users, especially female who are worried about their privacy being peered if...

Because the healthcare industry is under strict regulations in terms of comments before a drug launches, FDA overviews, and drug recalls, cultivating relationships with consumers is very crucial to brand reputation and client relations. From pharmaceutical companies to wellness organizations to health-related not-for-profits, the healthcare industry impacts about every person in one way or...

What if Social Media were a highschool?... →
Here is a unique graphic showing high school stereotypes and relating them to specific social media sites. Pretty funny/clever stuff.
Laswell's Twitter
Laswell’s Maxim: Who says what to whom in what channel with what effect?
Research in communications seeks to determine the answer to this maxim. A recent study on Twitter began to address some of these questions. Since Twitter allows a two way channel of communication, it allows a unique insight into this maxim. Twitter encompasses both mass media and direct personal communications. The...

Kevin Kelly, co-founder of Wired Magazine, gave a keynote at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. He discussed six trends that he thinks will be the most important for our connected world looking ahead at the next 20 years:
Screening (more content on screens, content converging on “one screen for all”)
Interacting (using more than just fingertips to use technology - a la Minority...

Increase in New Apps
Has anyone else noticed that in the past week or so there seems to be a rise in new apps?
With the new Color, picture app, Vimeo new video editing app, and I just read an article about 6 new baking apps. It seems to be getting out of control. How is a person suppose to keep up or know which ones are worth downloading? Should be interesting to see how many more come out in the next few months.
NYT Blog on Twitter Influence →
I typed this up already and it got deleted in an error message, so please excuse the brevity of my post.
On the NYT Magazine’s new blog, The 6th Floor, they posted this weekened an examination of measuring Twitter influence (bias disclaimer: I worked here). I thought it was really interesting that they made no mention of Klout, but instead chose the route of Twitalyzer.
But what’s...
The interweb helping Mr. Gibbons look fly.
This past weekend, I was invited to go to a wedding. I was tuxed out and looking extra delicious, but all of a sudden I was handed suspenders. I dont so much own a belt, so how does one use a pair of suspenders? Luckily there were some elitist with I Phones.
We quickly searched on YouTube and found how to put suspenders on. I was as cute as a bee. Not to mention, I was wearing suspenders and that...
Former White House Press Secretary to Work at... →
After leaving his position as White House Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs had the intention of going to work on an Obama reelection campaign, then taking a job at a private firm. It looks as though Facebook as something else in mind.
According to people who remained anonymous, the talks would be in preparation of a proposed IPO for Facebook, a company valued at roughly 60 billion dollars (according...
iPhone 4, the most popular camera on Flickr? →
Flickr categorized the cameras people use to take the photos they upload to Flickr and iPhone 4 has obviously become the most popular camera among all the cameras including other camera phones and professional cameras. It seems like that people are getting used to take photos wherever they go and share them on the internet and iPhone facilitate or nurture the needs with the emergence of various...
One brand that utilizes the leverage power of...
The other day I just began to follow tweets on one of my favorite brand, L’OCCITANE. As soon as I followed the brand, I tweeted them, saying that I’m a loyal fan and I created “press kits” for them in my PR writing class. They tweeted back in a second, appreciating my interest and ask for my PR advice. I was very happy to start the conversation. And as I look through the...
Simon & Schuster launches book club through social... →
So it seems like companies are now trying to attract young children by partnering with social media Even though it is great that they are acknowledging the social media trend but I don’t completely agree that children should be invovled with social media in such a young age. Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing is targeting young people between the age of 8 to 13, I doubt that if...
As a blackberry owner...
I’ve been pretty loyal over my last few phones. It was interesting to read in this All Things Digital blogpost that RIM (the folks behind Blackberry) will be adding Android support to the upcoming Blackberry tablet. Not sure what this means for the future.
Will proper English still exist? Sounds like people are getting lazier these days in their writing. Seems like there is an excessive use of slang words in communication nowadays.

I would love to use this as my viral video, but I took it like 3 yrs ago in college, so I guess I can’t use it. Oh, and I don’t actually have the original anymore, it’s only on Facebook (I’m not actually sure come to think of it if non-friends can view it, but either way). I also have not edited it at all. Only the people on our dorm floor got to see it the first time. We...
Cloud Girlfriend: A virtual girlfriend...to get a...
This one had me stumped. Of the plethora of SM start ups….Cloud Girlfriend promises to use social to enhance your real. The premise is simple: users define their perfect girlfriend. Then the site creates a virtual, perfect girlfriend ( perfect probably exists in virtual alone, anyway!). She ‘interacts’ with you on your FB and the like. And this perfect girlfriend will eventually...
Product and service no longer enough: users want...
Yet another social network/app making its way onto the crowded SM map! Unlike Pandora, Sondtrackr won’t impose any fees for unlimited listening ( yes that’s true!). It follows the same logic of users picking their favorite artist and creating a custom song station. So what’s different?
Soundtrckr, unlike Pandora, lets users listen to what their friends and network is listening...

TdMS Lecture: Dana Cuff
This afternoon I attended the final TdMS lecture, which was presented by UCLA Professor Dana Cuff. Professor Cuff had a lot of interesting things to say about the field of architecture and its intersection with other fields of study. Here are some of the points I found most relevant:
1. Architecture is about much more than designing buildings, but the discipline has to make this shift in order to...
Lackluster Social Media Job
I had my first experience tweeting to a company over spring break. This is the first time I used social media to directly communicate with a corporation. The scenario was, I was booking a bus ticket to New York City to hang out for a few days. I couldn’t decide between taking Megabus or Greyhound. Megabus offers free wifi on their buses, but I saw on the Greyhound site that they recently...
Twitter Implementing Location-Based Ads →
Twitter is now testing a new way to monetize—ads that can be purchased for specific location demographics. I honestly didn’t even realize this wasn’t already possible. Kind of surprising since Facebook’s doing it for quite a while now. But then again, it’s pretty rare for journalistic/aggregated websites to feature geo-targeted ads, so I suppose it’s still...
GetGlue Partners with NBC Universal →
The link is about GetGlue’s partnership with NBC Universal cable networks USA Network on entertainment checkin and recommendation service. The partnership will reward users who let their friends know when they are watching TV shows on Facebook or Twitter.
There are all kinds of checkin/checkout and info sharing services on social media sites. And new thoughts are brought onto the table...
Bravo Doing Social Media Right
BravoTV tweeted out an article from Likeable today, which basically highlights how well they do digital and social media. I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for them considering I interned in their emerging media department last summer, and I also think it’s a great read so if you’ve got a minute and want to take a look at a company that just gets it, it’s worth your time.

Say Hello to Google’s New Online Magazine: Think... →
I haven’t had a chance to read through most of the articles yet, but this is surely an interesting release. Their first issue focuses on data. In this information world, all we interact with is data!
Via Mashable:
Google’s has quietly launched its own full-length online magazine, a quarterly publication whose aim is to create a “breathing space in a busy world.”
“At Google, we often...
Is it March Madness or is it Friday Madness?
We all have recently been hit with the wonderful vocals of Rebecca Black. She is the newest YouTube hit and as of right now has 38 million plus views. Wowza talk about a viral hit! But she has been getting a lot of haters of this somewhat catchy song. So, I thought how fun would it be to pick other songs that have days in the week in them and associate them with NCAA March Madness teams. So I...
Fossil Creates a Social Media Wristwatch
In today’s world, wearing a watch is no longer a necessity as we have cellphones and and other handheld devices to tell the time. However, watch companies are seeking ways to reinvent their products to appeal to a younger generation. Fossil is the first to create a wristwatch that incorporates social media technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Fourasquare, email, and text...
StumbleUpon's Success Story
This morning, Mashable wrote an article titled “How StumbleUpon Went from Scrappy Startup to Social Media Powerhouse.” The article outlined the steps: Project Mode —> Venture-Backed Start-Up —> Property of eBay —> To Be Continued. The article chronicles their debate on whether or not to pursue the project, quest for funding, and eventual buy-out by eBay. This...

A sympathy tweet: death and social media
I experienced a whole new side of the social media phenomenon this past week. My father passed away on March 17th after a long illness. After making calls to the closest people in our lives, my siblings and I were trying to figure out a way to let our extended social network know what happened and what the arrangements were. We chose Facebook. I posted the news in my status update and the...
"Delta Airlines Lets Customers Check In & Get... →
According to this article from Mashable written by Christina Warren, Delta Airlines recently released a Facebook app that allows customers to check in to flights, to share their itineraries with friends, and to even print boarding passes through their Facebook account.
I do agree with the author in that this app would be useful for those who check their Facebook more frequently than their email...
Multitasking: This Is Your Brain On Social Media
I recently came across a blog article http://www.bitrebels.com/lifestyle/multitasking-this-is-your-brain-on-social-media/ which references several studies to argue that our thinking patterns (and therefore, brains) are affected by the constant demand that new communications technologies impose on us.
Our brains are wired at birth but neuro-psychologists discuss the concept of neuro plasticity...

The Importance of Response Time
One of the best things about social media is the ability to directly respond to consumer comments, whether positive or negative, in a timely fashion. If you’re not committed to having a two-way conversation, however, this could turn into a problem. A recent article I read analyzed the response time of various fast food restaurants.
The author found that Wendy’s had an response rate of...

on coming off as an elitist
There’s an article being passed around my Twitter stream about #SxSW goers, and those who are sick and tired of hearing about the super fun time everyone is having. The article, “On Twitter, ‘What a Party!’ Brings an Envious ‘Enough, Already!” from the New York Times really captured my thoughts after wading through my Twitter stream this past week while several...
Paid for YouTube Star
This girl became an over night viral video star after her parents paid for this music video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0
She has since been on GMA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NOHFy1Arf8 and is battling cyber bullying over how her song sucks and “having one of the worst voices ever”.
So, is being a YouTube star worth it?
Wheat Thins using Twitter Right
Recently I’ve seen a ton of wheat thins commercials in which they respond to a customer who tweeted something regarding their company. I thought to myslef, this is a company using twitter in the right way. Check out this commercial and many more.

"When social media backfires"
Having recently been working on the strategy for Envision Radio Networks, I also had to develop a social media policy/guidelines for the employees. I think one of the reasons such a policy is most pertinent is that anything that is said on an such online platform remains out there.
It is true then that we cant control social media, but only seek to mediate it. The need for a social media policy...
How Social Media, Internet Changed Experience of... →
With the advancement of technology and the strong presence in popular social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, it is much easier to send and receive information. With all the people involved online, there were constantly updates from all sorts of people relating to their experiences with the disaster that happened in Japan. I personally was also following on the updates in Japan as well,...
Twitter: 140 Million Tweets A Day →
Holy growth! This article is kind of lame…ok, very lame…but it makes the point thata Twitter has exploded in one year. It used to record 50 million tweets a day, back in March of 2010. One year later, it’s recording 140 million tweets a day! That’s incredible. Why do you think Twitter has exploded the way it has? I know I’ve seen so many Facebook friends who are...
SM Strategy tips: restaurants (and more)
Found this article in NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/16/business/media/16adco.html?scp=1&sq=SOCIAL%20MEDIA&st=cse
I think it offers some good pointers for people in class working with restaurants as clients. But a whole lot seems applicable to other clients as well! Enjoy!
Watch what you say on SM: where and how can a...
There have been numerous incidences about people getting into trouble as a result of what they post on SM platforms. The recent AFLAC and Chrysler cases in are proof for the nth time! http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/16/business/media/16adco.html?scp=1&sq=SOCIAL%20MEDIA&st=cse
However, from the standpoint of PR and corporate communications, there is a bigger question to address. Where must...
Social media: risk as well as relief for PR folks.
IBM, one of the first big companies to adapt the use of social media tools and platforms went on to recognize it as an enterprise level risk as well. And IBM is just one of the many corporations to realize that social media platforms also pose a huge potential risk, especially in the areas of reputation management and crisis management. And that therefore, any risk management plan must incorporate...
Watch your Mouth
While I was making my unbeatable bracket this week, all of a sudden I see a story about twitter. A writer for the AP called out a ref about some questionable calls down the stretch of a Rockets vs T Wolves game. Because of the means position of being a beat writer, the ref has filed a lawsuit against the beat writer claiming he defaced him using Twitter. My question is, is this the same story of...
