Thoughts on #rotoloclass
Hi class!
Since this is our wrap up post, I thought I could write things that have somehow stayed with me during this semester:
Social media is a LOT more than updating when you last had your coffee break. Its about creating a brand, building a network, establishing your expertise, reaching out to your audience/customers and more.
For PR, social media is a boon and disguise: its a great tool...

empire, daily orange, holy shirt
I really liked the incorporation of some of the books we read/were suggested in this class to explain suggestions for social media plans. using outside sources like this are really important for proving why companies should change their behaviors.
I used the Socialnomics video seen in the #ciscosu presentation as the opening for my brown bag lunch seminar on twitter to the local Red Cross chapter...
Presentation Reactions
I have to give it up for @kimincuse for doing such a great job with Empire!
Overall, most of the groups (when working with their company) focused on taking baby steps. If the company was not familiar with social media they knew it was essential to take small steps to catch the company up.
Also, a similar problem I have noticed with each company is most of the managers are very personal about...
New South Park
So the new South Park is having a #humanipad currently as the show airs. Thought was pretty interesting. Now I can see what other are thinking about the show and jazz. Woot!
Hondo Messa Group
I thought this was an interesting topic in last class. Here is a man who runs and operates a whole business by himself. That part to me really stood out. How could he possibly run all his wants in the Social Media realm. I think it would be a really good idea to get interns and since he is a professor at New House it almost does not make sense to not use the students. I really just couldnt get...

Parking in San Fran; There's an App for That
I came across an article today that announced a new feature for the drivers of San Francisco. The city has released a real-time parking system in eight pilot neighborhoods. SFPark is a new iPhone app that allows users to view open parking spots in real time. Eventually, the price of specific parking spots will change based on demand. These changes will take place once per month, dropping to as low...
reaction to the social media strategies
I thought everyone did a great job in presenting their strategies for the companies they worked with. Each company had a different focus and had different objectives they wanted to fulfill. All of the strategies focused on popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and blogs. I think it would be interesting to see somebody step outside the boundaries and use a social...
Reflections on Social Media Strategy Presentations
During today’s #rotoloclass, it was great seeing the different social media strategies that the grad students came up with.
It was interesting to see how different social media platforms were used, depending on the client and its strategic goals and objectives. Some focused on blogs, while others concentrated on Facebook and Twitter. Unlike my client, a lot of the grad students’ clients already...
Thoughts on Social Media Presentations Today:
Honda Mesa Records:
Interesting that Honda Mesa Records used Klout to determine some of the strategy.
Implementation time 1.5 weeks? You cant see any change with that small of a timeline. After hearing @rotolo’s comments it makes sense why the group was only able to see a small change. I would love to see how big of an impact this has after a month.
American Red Cross CNY:
I loved the...
I attended class today.
And here’s what I heard.
Hondo Mesa Group:
They decided to focus on one platform, develop it, and then use that as a basis for the others. This was because of the crazy small staff, and that he wasn’t able to keep up with all of the platforms. They found he was most comfortable with Twitter, so they used that as home base and used it to create leverage. They created a plan, then,...
My Reactions to the Social Media Strategy...
Many people seemed to focus on the same social media sites. I noticed that these included mostly Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Almost every group included these sites in their social media strategies. Also, I have seen that it is important to have dedicated staff working on the social media sites to show customers that there is an established presence and continue to drive daily visits to the...
Lupe Fiasco's Book club?
So in case you don’t know Lupe Fiasco is a hip hop artist that has recently released his new LASERS album. He does most of his promotions through twitter and facebook (aside from mainstream media). But he is doing something a bit different than other artists that is getting him quite a bit of attention. He has his own Book Club! and of course I joined.
Yes you read right, a Virtual Book...

Facebook Women in Technology Panel & Obama
So as if Facebook isn’t already taking over the world they also decide to discuss and attack the taboo topic of Women in technology. There are some statistics that make us see reality and it’s not a pretty picture. Their own chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s said “Women make up half of the U.S. workforce but represent only 25 percent of the technology...
Are iPhones and Androids stalking thier users??
Just a couple days ago, I was browsing the internet on my phone and ‘coincidentally’ i found an article on Cnet titled ‘Android Data tied to users? Some say yes.’
So, I’m quite sure you’re wondering which companies better yet what data these companies are tracking. According to Cnet, current and recent GPS coordinates, nearby Wi-Fi network addresses, and two...

Any Hidden Skills? →
This woman in the video made a origami crane with her tongue! Just posted for three day and got 98844 reviews so far! Hidden skills are always the key factor of a viral video. As more and more people show their “super” skills via the internet, internet users gradually generate a higher acceptance of what they think are funny or worthwhile to share. It is now a challenge for video makers to attract...
Facebook’s Like Button Celebrates Its First... →
Facebook’s like button is celebrating its first birthday! It’s hard to imagine this simple button has actually helped Facebook in spreading its social footprints and the number of sites that installed the button is not slowing down any soon, in fact, over 10,000 websites add the like button every day. Who knows this simple creativity has so much potential in helping Facebook gaining...
How "Survivor" is Using Social Media →
This is a Q&A from TechCrunch with the show Survivor’s host, Jeff Probst. Probst live tweets during the show now each week, and CBS has really been pushing it with advertising during the broadcasts. The interview is really interesting because it shows the dichotomy between someone like Probst who was tweeting to begin with, and the very slow to the draw corporate CBS, who didn’t...
How are Mac & PC people different
Check out this interesting article about the difference between Mac & PC people.
Here’s one excerpt I thought funny:
“They came up with interesting correlations between users’ chosen computing platforms and their demographics and personalities, as well as tastes in food, fashion and media.
Did it sort out like a comparison between Tea Party members and liberals? Are PC users...
Gawker's redesign is killing the network →
I’m really surprised that they stuck with it. I was never a gawker fan, but would browse the site from time to time. After the redesign I haven’t gone back, and it seems other people feel the same way.
New social media resources
Here’s an interesting article about new social media resources:

Best way to introduce SCVNGR to SU is via D1...
As far as I can tell, Scvngr has two key purposes. First is to interact using geo-based activities with other people in the immediate area. Duh. Second is to earn rewards based on what you accomplish while engaging in the aforementioned activities.
With that said, I think the best way that Syracuse University could put Scvngr to use is by harnessing its nifty little activity function to foster...
Qwiki Gaining Traction, Investments
If you haven’t heard about Qwiki yet, it’s a service which provides an overview of Wikipedia entries in an audio-visual output on the fly. Whereas Wikipedia is strictly text and still images, Qwiki allows users to search on information which will then be read aloud to them in a video. The video attempts to seamlessly read Wikipedia entries and display contextually relevant images for...

Social Media for SEO vs. Customer Engagement →
This is an interesting article by Lee Odden about the difference between using social media for search engine optimization, and using social media for customer engagement. The author encourages companies to stop thinking in terms of silos, and use an integrated approach. I thought it was interesting because I always thought the two went hand in hand!
Why (and how) SU should use SCVNGR.
From what I understand of SCVNGR, one thing is clear. It is especially suitable for use in University campuses. (Fun fact: the founder and CEO Seth Priebatsch developed SCVNGR when he was a freshman at Princeton!). The company has already teamed with a multitude of universities. While the comparisons with Foursquare are inevitable, I think both serve slightly different purposes when it comes to...
MarketMe - A Social Media Dashboard for small...
I found this tool while reading the Klout.com Blog . I thought it could be a great tool for your social media strategies and your companies in RotoloClass.
MarketMeSuite is a social media marketing dashboard for small businesses and teams.
Other platforms which integrate with Klout’s API: Hootsuite, Cotweet, Seesmic.
The interesting part about their integration of Klout is it can...
NO WAY!
i always thought it was cool of twitter how one could follow athletes. This spring, I was pumped to follow all my Red Sox players as I have been doing Celtics and other famous sports figures. However, something electrifying happened.
I was unaware that WWE superstars had Twitters. I tripped upon the greatest man in sports entertainments Twitter. Now I am happily following the Rock. He even...

The Current State of Social Networks
radstake:
Social media and free speech rights
A couple of recent incidences have raised questions about social media platforms and users’ right to free speech. Specifically, to what extent can a social media site enforce its authority to censor or remove content that is finds objectionable without infringing upon the users’ right to express themselves. This issue is gaining momentum, especially given the recent use of social media...
Twitter Usrs Hv Shrtr Rltnshps →
Recent numbers from dating site OK Cupid report that active users of twitter have an average relationship length which is at least a month less than the average.
I’m happy to report that my girlfriend (who shared this link with me) and I are both active tweeters and are going on 30 months. Exception to every rule.
Wheat Thins and Social Media Ads →
So these are a bit belated, but Wheat Thins has created a series of ads which related tweets with real life actions.
Instead of creating a social media campaign, the ads helped bring social media towards a mass media— which does a couple of things. It opens up social media to an audience which otherwise wouldn’t have cared if it existed. It helps engages current users of twitter to...

Apple and Twitter how do they relate?
Twitter has connections to more things than one could ever imagine possible. It’s really a glimpse of you and what you talk about with friends open for the world to see. Recently, I missed a week of class in #rotoloclass to go interview for Apple. 7 days and 5,000 applicants later it was down to 15 of us. All of which we’re internal employees besides myself and I couldn’t help...

The Impact of Twitter
According to this article from The Korea Herald, Shilla Hotel, one of Korea’s leading luxury hotels, has been criticized for its recent action of not admitting a customer who was wearing hanbok (a traditional Korean dress) to its restaurant. The customer who was banned was a famous hanbok designer Hye-sun Lee. The hotel’s reason for banning hanbok was that it is dangerous since others can trip...

#Hashable Motto: “Help you capture awesome moments and track your strongest relationships.” Company Background and History
Hashable is a 5-month year old company and it has taken an unusual route to get where it is now. Originally founded as Tracked.com, a would-be competitor to Yahoo Finance, the company had already raised over $11 million. After realizing Tracked was never going to be as big...
on breaking news
In an article from Poynter, it was revealed today that there would be no Pulitzer Prize awarded to a news organization for the Breaking News Reporting category.
This might testament to the power of social media and the fact that there really is no such thing as “breaking news” from a legitimate news organization anymore. Especially with Twitter, we’ve seen a higher percentage of...
Fearsquare?
Came across this article talking about an app that uses the Foursquare service and “then checks that data against official police statistics, which include robberies, violent crime and anti-social behaviour. Fearsquare can show how many crimes were committed in one month at the user’s ten most recent Foursquare check-ins.”
Seems a little scarey, but it let’s you know what...

Skipping #Rotoloclass for...social media (3/3)
So, onto the part about being in Washington.
Honda PR brought us out for 2 days to see the National Press Introduction for the new Honda Civic. There are a lot of things I am not allowed to say (there is an embargo on all information until April 20) but I will share some things that I learned about the process:
