4SQ
To be honest, never paid attention to what foursquare was, prior to this week. Even hearing about it in passing, people posting where they were, the first impression that came to mind - great, why are these people telling the world that they’re not home? My personal philosophy has always leaned right, slightly more conservative than the average person. I wasn’t going to do this.

Inn Complete
As I relaxed and recovered from a great night of slow-pitch (softball for used-to-be athletes) with my teammates at the Inn Complete on campus I noticed the foursquare logo on the napkin holder. I thought I could check-in! It was the first time I’ve seen the foursquare check-in at a business.

Checking in... in Arkport... where?
Searching for places near Arkport, NY was somewhat non-eventful. This is my hometown. I searched for ‘restaurants’ and received two results. One was 40 minutes away. The other was an hour. Another search for ‘restaurant’ (no s) came back with 15-20 places, but only two within 30 minute drive. A search for ‘food’ came back with the lone grocery store in...
Foursquare discounts, small and large
Looking at the Foursquare specials scene within a few miles of home I was struck by the different types of discounts on offer by smaller and larger businesses. We have lots of small independent shops within a few blocks. The few that offer specials seem to have fairly limited or small-scope specials. It makes sense that they want to attract people but also don’t have the budget to really...

Gamevertising with FourSquare
Naveen Selvadurai, one of the co-founders of Foursquare, makes the terrific point that “Other sites want to keep you inside the computer while our entire goal is to get you out of the house.” The other founder, Dennis Crowley, has described one of Foursquare’s goals as that of making life more like a video game. The details we’ve seen this week about Foursquare’s...
Brooklyn Pickle
This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of Location Based Social Media Networking, but it is the first time I’ve heard of Foursquare. Prior to the reading this week, and even this class, the most I’ve heard of LBSM was with an application on my blackberry. And even then it was more GPS based than anything – it just showed where you were.
With this week’s class surrounding LBSM and Foursquare, it’s...
zagat.com deal with foursquare
Prior to this class I have never heard of foursquare, but after watching the video on luke’s lobsters it made me realize that foursquare can really help businesses connect with their customers and everyone in a checked in customers network. Luke’s is not the only business taking advantage of this opportunity, as zagat.com, which is a restaurant review and rating website just recently...

Use Social Media Sites to Land An Internship
An article posted on Forbes.com caught my attention - How to Use Social Media Sites to Land An Internship.
http://blogs.forbes.com/jacquelynsmith/2011/06/17/how-to-use-social-media-sites-to-land-an-internship-3/
Internship candidates are using social media websites to reach out to employers to find and apply for opportunities. Likewise, employers are using social media sites to reach out to...
Deleting tweets & correcting erroneous tweets
I have deleted my first tweets this past week, and I am left wondering—where are they still floating around in the ether? They have disappeared from my timeline and are not showing up in Storify, but they MUST still be out there—if I delete a tweet within minutes of posting, will the Library of Congress Twitter archives still pick it up? And since my tweets were posted during a...
Google Health, "It's Not Social"
Last week, Google announced that they would be shutting down Google Health, a rather ambitious project that allows users to manage and store all of their health information. What I found interesting about this is that Adam Bosworth, the creator of Google Health (he no longer works for Google), thought that it failed because it wasn’t social...
Thoughts on SU video and Twitter
Watching the recent SU video situation unfold on Twitter has been very eye-opening as a concrete demonstration of the power and pitfalls of social media. The power of interconnected networks to spread a “small” story very quickly across national and international boundaries is on full display. Living in the San Francisco area, I doubt that this story would have reached me if not through my Twitter...
I work as an accountant for a public accounting firm. We have a small department within the firm that handles nothing but pension administration. I was having a conversation with one of my co-workers today, who has to be in her middle to late 50’s, and she was talking to be about how they could go about finding new clients to do their pension administration. She brought up that there is a...
Social Media makes the Money Wise section of Post...
I was thumbing through the Post Standard this morning and in the Money Wise section is an article on ‘building your business through social media.’ First, here is the link: http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/06/monica_d_johns.html . I found this to be both interesting and informative, given the subject matter of this class. The contributing writer, Monica Johns, is a...
Sliced Bread and Geico
In addition to learning that sliced bread is a relatively new concept, I realized something I’ve just taken for granted. I have never been moved by the thousands of Geico commercials I’ve seen over the years. The Sliced Bread video explained it all.
For me, the Geico commercials are not remarkable at all. While a few of them have been funny, once you see a commercial a few hundred...
Godin is right to a point...but traditional...
Pretty interesting talk by Seth Godin. I found the video to be interesting because Godin talks about marketing in a way that goes against most of the stuff I learned about marketing at SU. I agree that nowadays marketers have to create a compelling message to get our attention today because our attention spans are shorter (the Trust Agents guys also made this point). For example, even P&G...
AT&T's use of social media(by dmstoc)
I thought I posted this on the rotolo class tumblr last week, I posted it in the wrong place.. .Here goes..
I decided to examine AT&T’s social network presence because I am an AT&T employee (disclaimer: the views and opinions expressed on this blog are solely for academic purposes; I do not represent AT&T in any official capacity). With that disclaimer out the way, I decided to...
Sliced Bread
A few comments on the video - is this the guy that Steve Jobs acquired his taste for presentation attire? Or perhaps are they both in a black mock-turtleneck Otaku that I’m not aware of? What I took away from this video was that there are people - let’s say those hi-lighted in the first 1/3 of the curve that “should” be focused on when marketing. These groups of people...
Waiting for Godin
(This is Paul Roberts, by the way. I must have posted as a outsider. An outsider!)
Seth Godin’s lecture is fun and interesting in the way most TED talks are fun and interesting: an innovator explores aspects of innovation in front of a crowd chosen for their commitment to innovation. His assertion of the need for creativity even at the risk of failure is an important one. I would have...
"otaku" in a school library
In his video ”Sliced Bread and Other Marketing Delights,” Seth Godin describes the Japanese concept of otaku as “the desire of someone who is obsessed” (people “have otaku” about their obsession). He urges businesses to actively seek out these innovators and early adopters and market directly to them so that word-of-mouth will help a product’s popularity...
ufc uses social media to grow
Social media can be used to grow businesses and that is exactly what the ufc did; the company uses twitter and video blogs to promote the brand and make the brand more accessible to the fans. The ceo and owner of the company, dana white, is an avid twitter user and hired a public relation company named digital royalty to educate the fighters on social media and how to use it effectively. He also...
Golf "getting" social media?
Being that the summer weather has arrived in the northeast after a long winter and wet and cold spring, my attention wants to turn to golf. As I am about to volunteer at the US Open this week, I thought I’d look into how golf equipment providers are using social media. Starting at titleist.com, the familiar facebook, youtube and twitter icons were on the home page grouped under the...
#Rotoloclass Turning Stone Casino's use of Social...
When I was given the task to explore a company’s social media presence, I looked at the companies and brands I follow. I consider my Twitter feed to be valuable real estate, so I am selective in who I follow.
Turning Stone Casino, located 30 miles east of Syracuse, opened in 1993. Since then, the Oneida Indian Nation has expanded the casino, and is involved in several other businesses in...
SkinnyGirl Margaritas & Bethenny Frankel
In week 3, I am still getting acclimated to social media in general. The interesting thing that has transpired is that I am now conscious of the little links that I see when I visit a website - such as the F for Facebook and the T for Twitter. The discussion this week is to focus on a company and how they use social media to their advantage.
I have recently become obsessed with the SkinnyGirl...
jetBlue Airways
Most people have a deep hatred for airline companies. In order to change their image and connect more with customers, airlines are using social media to become more favorable in customer’s eyers. One of the leading airlines in the social media realm is jetBlue. JetBlue prides itself on being the airways people respect and with about 1.6 million followers on twitter, they’re doing a good...

rotoloclass:
As someone who is from Vermont and a huge fan of Ben and Jerry’s, this is a company I’ve gotten to know quite well, and even more so when my wife was pregnant. Even before the boom oBen and Jerry’s was well into the social media scene with the way they interacted with the public by giving tours of the ice cream plant. Additionally, they were very in tune with the customer base...
#RotoloClass: eTrade Baby! Social Media Strategy →
rotoloclass:
There is no doubt that the “baby commercials” for etrade are going a long way to “de-humanize” etrade. I mean let’s face it, the scares of the stock market are not making investment decisions any easier this days. Even though they are an independent online trading company, which does help investors to be independent, there is so much they could be doing in the way of YouTube...

Comcast
Comcast is the largest cable provider in the U.S. serving more than 24 million customers across their variety of services including digital cable television, internet service, and digital phone. Despite this immense footprint and the implied success that comes along with that, Comcast has historically been portrayed as a poor-service company, including winning Consumerist.com’s worst Company in...
Simply the Best Social Media Success - Ben and...
Not only does Ben and Jerry’s produce the best ice cream in America, but they have formulated one of the best social media campaigns in America. Currently working as a tour guide for Ben and Jerry’s Waterbury Factory, I cannot say enough about the successful social media strategy implemented by Ben and Jerry’s. With almost 3 million followers on Facebook and thousands on...
Lush
Lush is a brand I was introduced to about a year ago, and have been moderately fascinated with since. Going into one of their shops is more like shopping with a few friends than working with sales associates, and I was pleasantly surprised to see their social media presence mimics that atmosphere.
Twitter is the best example. On Twitter, Lush is very responsive to Tweets. In fact, the bulk of...
CNY Central
While it may not be the first thing people think of when mentioning social media, I have chosen to discuss CNY Central for this weeks assignment. I watch the news every night and I have Michael Benny’s closing comments about following and friending CNYcentral is burned into my brain. CNYcentral is the leading news station, or so they claim, in Central NY. They relay news, sports, weather,...
@UFC
Over the past several years, the UFC has changed their image as a backyard wrestling or “human cock-fighting” organization to become the fastest growing sport in the world. Part of this transformation has been the creation of huge social media effort, due partly to the fact that traditional media originally refused to cover the UFC. Social media is used not only to get information out to fans, but...
Untangled – Time Warner Cable / Social Media
The first thing that comes to mind when people start talking about a cable company is of course their cable bill and how high it is. The second thing people think of is the lack of customer service they provide, either on the phone or in person. And lastly people think that cable companies are just huge corporate giants that could care less about people, and more about the bottom line. Beside –...
@Motorola
The company I chose to look into was Motorola. This was mainly because I have a Motorola phone and I have followed Motorola on twitter and Facebook for a while to get immediate updates about what is going on with my phone.
Motorola’s main product is mobile phones. Through social media, Motorola does a lot to interact with customers and solve their everyday problems. Nearly every tweet they have...
Examining Bruegger’s social media presence.
Why did I pick Bruegger’s to profile? I like Bagels, that’s why! That and I have “Liked” them on Facebook for a while and a few months ago they sent out a coupon to their fans for three free bagels. They have been near and dear to my heart ever since.
If you go to their website’s homepage and scroll down you will see links to their Twitter account and FB page.
On their Twitter page it looks...
eTrade Baby! Social Media Strategy
The first thing that came to mind for me for this assignment was the eTrade baby. Initially, I did a search online for their social media tactics and found an article from 2009: http://www.netbanker.com/2009/02/etrade_casts_a_wide_social_net_to_support_the_baby_campaign.html which was a great start on understanding their views, but things have since changed as well. Both eTrade’s Facebook...
The Grio's social media presence
I’ve decided to profile the social media presence of TheGrio.com, ”the first video-centric news community site devoted to providing African Americans with stories and perspectives that appeal to them but are underrepresented in existing national news outlets.” In cooperation with NBC (who provides access to content), the Grio’s website provides aggregated and original...
Social Media and the LEGO Group
My boys are seven and five, so the floors in our house are carpeted primarily with Legos. This is not unusual: the Lego (or LEGO, but who’s trademarking?) Group is probably the most successful focused-product toy manufacturer in history, and the world’s children spend (according to Lego’s website) more than 5 billion hours per year playing with Lego products.
It...
Getting Social with Lonely Planet
As a frequent traveler (unfortunately, more often for work than for pleasure!) I am always on the lookout for travel tips and insider information about destinations around the world. A lot of my friends are fiercely loyal to Lonely Planet guide books so I decided to examine how Lonely Planet is building on this brand loyalty through social media channels.
Still tied to my pre-Rotoloclass habits,...
Articulating My Objections to Twitter
While I’ve been online in one form or another since before there was a world wide web, and I’m a long-time participant in a number of long-running web forums, I find myself resistant to Twitter. So far, not only am I not attracted but in fact I’m kind of repelled.
It’s possible that I merely fear the new, and if that’s the case then I hope familiarity will reassure...
WWE: World Wrestling Entertainment
As much as I’d like to sit here and talk about how sexy and electrifying Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is, or how captivating Stone Cold Steve Austin is, or how entertaining it is to see Triple H spit water onto the crowd, it would be pointless to because there are so many other factors a WWE Fan such as myself could speak on. I could tell you how much I miss Batista’s presence. I could tell you how...

Examining Allstate Social Media
This week we are supposed to check out a company and their social media presence…
Well, it took me a while to decide exactly what company I wanted to look at — but you know what sold me? One word, Mayhem.
For those of you that might not know what that means.. take a look.

Enterprise Social Networks
I stumbled across an article while reading the news headlines today. The article linked to a White Paper hosted by CIO.com and provided by a
company called Yammer. In it, it describes the growing use of
Enterprise Social Network (ESNs) in large and small organizations.
Enterprise Social Networks offer a number of features and benefits to organizations including rich personal profiles for...
adventures in Twitter advanced search
Hi all,
So there’s a conference happening right now in NYC that I am very interested in following on Twitter—the Personal Democracy Forum, which is using the hashtag #pdf11. This is a two-day conference ending today, and I want to scan through all the tweets from yesterday.
Twitterfall will only display realtime hashtag results and only seems to go 30 tweets into the...
Toyota creates social network
I first heard that toyota was creating a social network for people that own toyota cars while watching the news on television one night. I decided to do a little more research and came across this article: http://pressroom.toyota.com/releases/toyota+friend+social+network.htm . Toyota teamed up with Salesforce.com to build the network that will be called “Toyota Friend”. It allows...

Social Media in our cars...Cool gadget, or bad...
You have probably seen the commercial on TV that starts with a couple engaging in a goodnite kiss…the man hops into his car and touches a button to access his Facebook account, the car then speaks out the FB status of his date, “Best First Date… Ever” Very cute!
With all the talk about distracted driving, do you think that Social Media tools should be incorporated into...
Activism and Social Media
Recent events in Egypt symbolize the power social media has in shaping the ability to accelerate democratic change. A key part of the success in Egypt was in studying the various types of revolutions that have worked in other countries. I looked into a article that explained this: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/14/world/middleeast/14egypt-tunisia-protests.html As New York Times reporters David...
Twitter and Non-Profit Organizations
I have used Twitter for the past year mainly to follow organizations that I am interested in and want to keep up with. A large number of those organizations are non-profits. One of my favorite organizations to follow is the Rosamond Gifford Zoo (#SyracuseZoo). They do such an exceptional job of highlighting their purpose and mission with multiple tweets each day featuring one of the animals, an...
