Social Media in the Enterprise

Welcome to #Rotoloclass!

Hello and welcome to the #Rotoloclass blog!

I’m your TA, @AlyssaHenry. It’s going to be an exciting semester, and there’s so much to look forward to…

We’ll be covering all kinds of topics, including: Twitter, location-based services, blogging, ROI, building an online presence as a brand, social media #fails, privacy, viral videos and more!

Professor Rotolo has also invited some really awesome guest speakers to Skype into class and talk about their professional experience using social media.  You can see the full list here.

For the first time in the history of #Rotoloclass, we’ll be working together as a class to build a social strategy for a local organization… CNY Central! We’re happy to welcome them to the #Rotoloclass experience.

You can get started by following me, @rotolo, @rotoloclass and @cnycentral on Twitter (if you don’t have an account, make one!). You’re encouraged to use all your technology in class (dumbphones, smartphones, laptops, iPads, fax machines, tricorder, time turners…), just make sure you use the class hashtag, #rotoloclass, when you’re tweeting.

We’re looking forward to turning you into social media #rockstars!

One last thing… I hope you like Ke$ha.

@Unmarketing in #rotoloclass!

We were so excited to have Scott Stratten (@unmarketing) skype in to #Rotoloclass at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies.

Scott provided students with insights into social media marketing and branding, and there was some really great content. If you want to get a glimpse into the conversation, you can find the entire transcript of our tweetchat on http://wthashtag.com/Rotoloclass.

#Rotoloclass is Tuesday/Thursday from 11-12:20, follow along with us! You can also follow @rotolo, @SyracuseU and @Syracuseischool on twitter.

@ChrisBrogan & Trust Agents

Hi all,

I hope you enjoyed speaking via Skype with @ChrisBrogan today! The conversation both in class and on twitter was excellent, and I’m looking forward to reading your papers to learn more about your reactions to Trust Agents!

There were 361 total mentions of #rotoloclass today, and it’s almost impossible to pick out “top tweets”. They’re all very informative! You did a great job keeping those following along outside of class informed of what @ChrisBrogan was saying. So, instead of posting the highlights of our twitterchat today, I’m going to include a link to the entire transcript here: http://bit.ly/e5wOBU

Also, check out this social media #fail from Kenneth Cole via @andCKsays: http://huff.to/eBHjiW

Reminder: Your strategy proposal is due Tuesday! You can find the form on the iLMS and it should be submitted through rotoloclass@gmail.com. You do need to have a client chosen, and you must be able to communicate with someone in that company throughout the project. There are 3 clients still available from the list that we posted on the iLMS, so if you’re still looking and would like to work with one of those companies, please let me know asap! If you have questions about the proposal or strategy assignment, email, tweet me, or set up a Skype office hours appointment with me.

Additional assignment information

Hi all,

I’ve received several questions regarding the Tumblr, Trust Agents paper and the Strategy Proposal. Here’s some additional information that should be helpful :)

Tumblr: You are expected to post once or twice a week. In the syllabus, the course blog is worth 20% of your grade! Also, you are encouraged to not only submit original posts, but to comment on other’s posts as well. That does count toward your participation! However, the comment must be substantive and thoughtful, not “great post” or “I agree”.

Trust Agents: This is a response paper. Do not summarize the entire book. You should be contributing your opinions and responses to the main points and specific things you found interesting or thought-provoking in Trust Agents. Your main reference is the Trust Agents book. You’re welcome to use articles from class or your own research that support your opinions or compare/contrast information from the book, but that’s not a requirement. If you have any other questions, let me know and we can set up a skype office hours session tomorrow (Wednesday) before 7 p.m. You will be graded based on your understanding of concepts in Trust Agents and how clearly you express your thoughts. The paper should be 5-7 pages double-spaced. It must be emailed to rotoloclass@gmail.com before class on Thursday.

Strategy Assignment Proposal: As noted in the syllabus, your proposal is due next Tuesday, Feb 8th. Graduate students, you can work in groups of two on the strategy assignment if you wish, or you can work on your own. Undergraduate students, you can work in groups of 2-3 if you want, or on your own. If you are working in a group, you should only hand in ONE proposal with all group member names on it! The guidelines for your final strategy plan, a template for your strategy plan and a template for the proposal will be posed to the ILMS tonight (https://ilms.syr.edu/). A list of clients will also be posted. However, so far we have only received requests from 4 clients. There are not enough for everyone in class, and you should not rely on this list.  You are encouraged to find your own clients for the social media strategy assignment. Your proposal will be denied if you do not have a contact in that company that you can communicate with throughout the assignment.

If you have any other questions, please let me know through email, twitter, or comments on this post.

I hope you’re all looking forward to @ChrisBrogan speaking in class on Thursday!

Top Tweets:

@Adammc314 My whole twitter feed is getting blown up by people unlocking the Syracuse 44 badge on @foursquare and #RotoloClass and I’m jealous of both.

@Laur3n_Newm4n Are social media fails more detrimental to big companies or smaller ones / startups? Or is it a different kind of bad. #RotoloClass

@j_lynn_smith 2 what extent do employees of companies need 2 use their personal social media accounts 2 rep employer? Solid or flexible line? #rotoloclass

@Cbeck527 What would happen if the Gap Logo was applied to more recognizable brands: http://gapify.tumblr.com/ #rotoloclass

@jennliddy In #rotoloclass . Engaging customers negatively in social media may forever taint your image. Apologize first and tell the truth.

@marcuspowers77 This #SMFail talk reminds me of when Steve Jobs replied to the iPhone4 reception issue by saying “You’re holding it wrong.” #rotoloclass

Laur3n_Newm4n Is there a point when you just can’t apologize any more; when the customer just won’t accept it? #raisingmyhand #SMFail #RotoloClass

Tumblr reminder: If you are not listed as a contributor to this tumblr, please tweet/email me. It’s the third week of class, we do expect you to be actively posting. Additionally, please do not use the “submit” button on the top of http://rotoloclass.tumblr.com/ . I will not be approving posts submitted that way by our students after this week. That is specifically for those who are not contributors/class members but want to add to our conversation (and they are welcome to do so). You should be submitting your posts through your tumblr dashboard on the right sidebar. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Trust Agents reminder: The paper on Trust Agents is due this Thursday (2/3). It should be a response to the book. The format is double spaced, 5-7 pages. Please contact me if you would like to have a skype office hours session about the paper on Wednesday BEFORE 7 PM. The author, @ChrisBrogan, will be skyping in to class on Thursday, which is very exciting! Come prepared to discuss his perspectives on social media.
